Talent Identification
Identifying young football talent requires a keen eye for potential, mental attitude and resilience together with a deep understanding of the game. SSI scouts and coaches look for a number of key attributes in young players. Technical skills are paramount; a young player must demonstrate excellent ball control, dribbling, passing and shooting abilities.
Additionally physical attributes such as speed, agility and endurance are critical together with vision and game sense; each one of these elements significantly impacts a player’s on the field performance. Beyond these attributes tactical awareness is essential. The understanding of game strategies, positioning and ability to read the game can make the difference with international and world class.
Another key differentiator is an ability to make smart decisions under pressure and to remain calm even in high pressure situations. These added to an adaptability to different playing situations and opponents makes for a quality player. Mental qualities such as determination allied to a strong work ethic are equally important. A player’s attitude to training, to taking on-board positive criticism and an improvement mindset can often be the difference between good and great players.
Finally, SSI’s scouts look for a youngster’s potential to grow and develop. This involves assessing performance levels, how they have changed and predicting they might further progress given the right coaching and support. Identifying young talent is as much about spotting raw talent as it is about envisioning the path for future success.
